Mrs. Cathlean Jones

Cathlean Jones, nee Baird, along with her identical twin Evelean, was born August 22, 1931, in Asheville, NC. They were the third and fourth children born to Mr. And Mrs. Nazra and Troy Baird. After graduating Geer High School in Belton, SC, she married the love of her life, John A. Jones, on August 19th, 1950. Their first children were fraternal twins (Johnny and Connie), born in 1951; with Gloria Jean and Merial Stephanie following in 1955 and 1958 respectively. John moved the family to Washington, D.C. in the early 1960’s, where she joined her twin sister and her family. They built a comfortable life and adopted a son (Victor Tyrone). Cathlean thought her family was complete, when God blessed her with Pamela Denise, born in 1967. Cathlean was a community leader and social butterfly; in DC she was a founding member of a club named “The Sociables”, a group of women that would gather together to raise money, celebrate life, and reminisce on their early days. If there was one thing that stood out about Cathlean throughout her life, it was her love for babies/children, and her avid support of the young people in her community. She ran a daycare business in DC for many years, lovingly caring for the children of working parents; as well as, tirelessly raising funds for various charities benefitting youth in Belton and DC alike. In the early 90’s, Cathlean and John retired and returned to Belton, SC. They enjoyed traveling the world, highlighted by a trip to Germany to visit family, and a cruise to Hawaii. Cathlean was a faithful, committed, and serving member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Belton, SC, and Vermont Avenue Baptist Church in Washington, DC. In her life, between the two churches, she served as a Missionary, a Nursery Nurse, a Deaconess, and was a member of multiple other church groups and clubs. She loved Pastor Dean’s sermons and watched the YouTube videos posted each week. She loved life, she loved parties, and she danced until her last year. She loved conversing and visiting with her friends and family. She was a strong and spirited woman, whose faith in God carried her through to her last breath. Cathlean is preceded in death by her parents; the twin she grieved for 40 years, Evelean Sloan; her sister Dorothy Mae Presley, her brother Edmund Baird; niece La Varn Crosby and her beloved, forever in her heart, husband, John A. Jones. She is with them now and we know she is happy. Cathlean is survived by her daughters, Connie, Gloria, Merial, and Pamela Jones; her sons Johnny (Melvina), and Victor Jones; her granddaughters Tamika Jones-Hudson (Darryl), Victoria and Franziska Jones; her grandson Jamall Jones; her great-granddaughters Coley and April Hudson; her great-grandsons Jelani Jones and Tristan Levy Upchurch-Jones; her nieces Cecillia Sloan-Ashton (Earl), Crystal and Tamara Baird, Alecia Nelson, Tiffany Jones and great-niece Odessa Jones; her nephews Marvin Eddie, Stanley, Anthony (Danette) Sloan, and Thomas Jones (Jackie), Marcus (Kerry) and Martin Baird. Cousins Valerie Durant (Richard), and Linda Wiliams, and a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews, and other Jones, Baird, Sloan, Howard, Cox, Watkins family members and friends, too numerous to mention. Funeral services will be held Saturday 12:00 Noon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be Friday from 12:00-6:00P.M. at the funeral home. Holloway's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
